About the Client:
The ALS Association’s mission is to discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest. Thanks in part to the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge, new breakthroughs in research are happening now and thousands of people diagnosed with ALS receive free services. The ALS Association operates its services through local chapters across the U.S.
The Problem:
The local chapters all had outdated websites that they did not fully have control over. The sites had difficult menus, outdated designs, and were very difficult to edit. We also had an internal challenge because 15 chapters all wanted to move to our web solution and all needed to be off their old platform as quickly as possible, but we didn’t have the staff capacity to deliver 15 separate projects that quickly.
The Solution:
I did a deep dive into audience analysis, information architecture, and content strategy with the largest chapter to come up with wireframes and a site map that could be used as a starting point for all the other chapters. I designed and built a site that can be very easily updated and is ADA-compliant for users with disabilities. I also designed and edited the content of their pages to make them more engaging and easier to understand. Once we had a solid foundation with the largest chapter, I created a process for sharing the information with the other smaller chapters so they all benefited from the work of others. This ability to share a common design and content and then customize it for specific chapters enabled us to deliver 15 sites in a short period of time.
